Jim Walden was quoted in a recent New York Magazine article examining New York City’s use of social media influencers to communicate with the public.
Walden contacted the New York City Department of Investigation on behalf of the nonprofit coalition NYC Common Sense to request an investigation into the City’s influencer program. The request raises questions about the use of public funds, the disclosure of government-sponsored content, and the preservation of public records when City officials communicate through private messaging platforms.
“New Yorkers should not have to wonder whether the friendly video in their feed is independent commentary, undisclosed advertising, or government-funded political messaging,” Walden told the publication. “A transparent investigation would protect legitimate public-service communications while ensuring that City Hall does not use public money and private channels to manufacture favorable coverage for the Mayor.”
